Time to get excited, Australian swimming might just be back. Australia will take a 35-strong swim team to Tokyo for next month's Olympics following six-day trials that witnessed a world record, four new Commonwealth marks and a host of national bests.

Day six of the event now underway in Japan, with four more strong shots at gold for the Dolphins. The headline event is probably the men's 100m freestyle, where reigning Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers.

The first Australian Olympic swimmer was Freddy Lane in Paris 1900. Swimming in the River Seine, Lane won the 200 metres freestyle and the obstacle race over the same distance. The next gold medals came in Stockholm 1912 when Sarah "Fanny" Durack and Wilhelmina "Mina" Wylie finished first and second in the inaugural women's swimming race, the 100m freestyle.
